If you like Japanese food you are going to love these! This recipe takes your classic deep fried mozzarella cheese sticks and coats them in an absolutely DELICIOUS sweet and spicy Japanese inspired sauce that you are going to want to just coat everything in!

How To Prepare Spicy Mozzarella Cheese Sticks

🔪 Cut your mozzarella into ½ inch thick rectangles.

🥚 Whisk the eggs and milk together.

🧂 Add the seasoned salt to the pulverized panko.

🥣 Pass the cheese through the flour, then the egg and panko. Do a double dredge, egg and panko.

🧊 Let them sit in the freezer for 20-30 minutes.

🍯 Add the honey, rice vinegar, grated garlic and soy sauce to a skillet. Simmer until it coats the back of a spoon.

🎛️ Add in the salsa macha and mayo. Whisk on low heat until well incorporated.

Substitutions for Spicy Mozzarella Cheese Sticks

  • Other cheeses that are good for frying are cheddar, provolone, paneer, queso blanco or halloumi or even string cheese. So if you want to switch it up and try some other options feel free to have fun!
  • If you don’t have Japanese mayo, regular mayo will work fine.

Variations for Spicy Mozzarella Cheese Sticks

  1. No Sauce Variation: These Mozzarella Cheese Sticks are delicious without the sauce also, so if you would prefer to make them and stick with the classic marinara sauce you can always do that.
  2. Buffalo Sauce Variation: Make an absolutely delicious buffalo sauce to mix it in instead. In a sauce pan heat up 1½ cup buffalo sauce and ⅓ cup honey for 3-4 minutes on medium low heat. Turn off and mix in 2 tbsp butter and 2 tbsp sour cream and toss, toss, toss!

Ingredients 

  • 8 oz mozzarella block
  • 2 eggs
  • 2 tbsp whole milk
  • 2 cups panko, pulverized
  • ½ tsp seasoned salt
  • ¼ cup flour
  • Black and toasted sesame seeds, for topping
  • avocado oil for frying, for frying

Sauce

  • cup rice vinegar
  • cup honey
  • 3 tbsp soy sauce
  • tbsp salsa macha, salsa macha recipe or chili crisp
  • tbsp japanese mayo
  • 1 tiny garlic clove, grated

Instructions
