Caramelized Shallot & Onion Dip

Caramelized Shallot & Onion Dip ✨ it is seriously addicting, everytime I make it it is the first thing to go!


  • 6 shallots, thinly sliced
  • 1 yellow onion, thinly sliced
  • 2 tbsp unsalted butter
  • 1.5 tbsp balsamic vinegar
  • 1 tbsp tamari
  • 3 tbsp chives, more for topping
  • 2 tbsp japanese mayo
  • 1/4 cup sour cream
  • 8 oz cream cheese
  • 1/2 tsp chipotle powder, more or less depending on desired heat level
  • 1 tsp dried oregano
  • 1/4 tsp nutmeg
  • 1/3 cup grated gruyere
  • Salt and pepper to taste


  • Add the onions and shallots to a preheated pan and sautee on medium for 5 min. Lower heat to medium low and caramelize for 45 min, mixing often
  • Add in butter and pinch of salt. Keep caramelizing for another 15-20 min. Add in the balsamic and tamari. Cook for 2-3 min. Let them cool for 15-20 min
  • Add the cream cheese, sour cream, mayo, gruyere, chives, chipotle, oregano & nutmeg to the food processor. Process til smooth
  • Add in the onions and pulse a few times
  • Serve with chips and chives on top
