it is seriously addicting, every time I make it it is the first thing to go! It’s very easy to make and it is sooo delicious. It is creamy, and deeply savory. Trust me, it will be a main character at your next party! It’s also perfect for a date night in.

How To Prepare Caramelized Shallot Dip

🧅 First, add the onions and shallots to a preheated pan and sauté on medium for 5 minutes. Then, lower heat to medium low and caramelize for 45 minutes, mixing often.

🧈 Secondly, add in butter and pinch of salt. Keep caramelizing for another 15-20 minutes. Then, add in the balsamic and Tamari. Cook for 2-3 minutes. Let them cool for 15-20 minutes.

🧀 Add the cream cheese, sour cream, mayo, gruyere, chives, chipotle, oregano and nutmeg to the food processor. Then, process until smooth.

❤️ Then, add in the onions and pulse a few times.

🌿 Lastly, serve with chips and chives on top.

Substitutions and Variations

  1. Herbs are always very easy to swap for your favorite ones or which ever ones you have on hand.
  2. Spices are also very easy to sub for any spices of your choice.
  3. I served mine with ruffles, but you can serve with anything your heart desires, such as a different kind of chips, veggies, etc.
  4. You can adjust the amount of chipotle powder to your desired level of heat.
  5. You can use soy sauce instead of Tamari.
  6. You can use regular mayonnaise instead of Japanese mayo.

Ingredients 

  • 6 shallots, thinly sliced
  • 1 yellow onion, thinly sliced
  • 2 tbsp unsalted butter
  • 1.5 tbsp balsamic vinegar
  • 1 tbsp tamari, or soy sauce
  • 3 tbsp chives, more for topping
  • 2 tbsp japanese mayo
  • 1/4 cup sour cream
  • 8 oz cream cheese
  • 1/2 tsp chipotle powder, more or less depending on desired heat level
  • 1 tsp dried oregano
  • 1/4 tsp nutmeg
  • 1/3 cup gruyere, grated
  • Salt and pepper , to taste
